7 Ways to Attract Amazing Copywriting Clients for FREE!

clients

You can build a copywriting business with nothing but a laptop, a good wifi connection, and the right skills … but without clients, is it really a business? Nope. It’s just a sad, lonely hobby. And nobody likes sad, lonely hobbies.

Don’t worry – I’ve got you! Copywriting clients are literally everywhere, you just have to know where to find them. It’s not all one-sided though. Yes, you should be out prospecting and doing the work to connect with your ideal clients, but you can also make sure that the clients who are already out there looking can easily find and identify you as the service provider they can’t wait to work with.

In this article, I’m going to give you 7 ways to attract amazing copywriting clients straight to you. Oh, and did I mention these tips are all things you can do for FREE with nothing but the aforementioned laptop and wifi connection? Sweet!

Optimize Your Social Media Profiles

Quick – go to one of your social media profiles and read it as if you’re one of your ultimate dream clients. Did it grab your attention? Did it communicate clearly about who you are, who you serve, and what you do?

In other words, would you hire you? Or would you get confused and not be moved at all?

Don’t make people read between the lines. Just give a short, written version of your elevator pitch and a link to contact you. This is especially important for your business accounts. If a person can’t tell what you can do for them right off the bat, there are plenty of others out there who can.

Do:  Keep it short and sweet. Profile descriptions allow a limited number of characters. Make the most of what you have by being concise and to the point. Mine looks something like this:

✏️ Sales Copywriter & Messaging Expert for 7- & 8-Figure Entrepreneurs | 🎓 Founder of Written Results Academy.

Note the use of symbols and emojis to grab attention without adding words.

Don’t:  Make them read between the lines. Because they won’t. You have less than a handful of seconds to grab their attention. Be clear.

Also, be very careful about posting too much about your business on your personal profile description. Facebook frowns on using personal profiles for business promotions.

Join Facebook Groups

If you want to attract clients, you have to be visible where they are. Free Facebook groups are a great way to show up and offer value to your ideal clients. When you serve, not only do you create a positive impression, you show your expertise and become someone people feel like they know, like, and trust.

You WANT to be someone people know, like, and trust.

There’s no cap on groups you can be in, so don’t be afraid to join a good number of groups and start interacting, but make sure you’re doing so in a value-add way, not a spammy-spammerson way.

Do:  Answer questions posted in the group. Comment on people’s posts – show up as you and have fun! Offer your expertise just to help people out.

Don’t:  Make self-promo posts unless it’s a promo post. Ever. NEVER ever. Remember, this is someone else’s group – some one who has worked long and hard to build the group. Never undermine the group owner by spamming the group unless you’re given permission or you’ll earn yourself a one-way ticket to blocks-ville.

Be a Friend

You know the old saying, “If you want to make a friend, be a friend”? This strategy works along the same principle. One way to attract copywriting clients is to make friends with people who also serve your ideal clients and customers. I’m talking about:

  • Funnel builders
  • SEO experts
  • Social media managers
  • Facebook ads agency owners
  • Video marketers
  • Email integrators

Making friends with other service providers ensures that you’ll be top-of-mind when their client asks them, “Hey, do you know any good copywriters?” Yes, yes they do – and it’s you!

Do:  Be genuine. Making friends with other service providers is fun. Look for people who have similar work styles and work in the same industries. Your love connection dreamy dream clients are waiting inside those relationships for you!

Don’t:  Yes, this one is definitely playing the long game. It’s likely not going to happen overnight. I mean, you’d want to vet somebody before recommending them too, right? The last thing your new service provider friends want to do is send their valued client to someone who doesn’t serve them well.

Leverage What’s Working on Social Media

I get it, I get it. It’s so frustrating when you master one social media strategy only to realize that it’s no longer working. I’d love to think I can just settle into a posting schedule and have it continue to bring results for me for years to come, but that’s just not how social media works. Things are always changing, and if you don’t adapt with the changes, you’ll be left behind.

Stay on top of what’s getting the best results on the social media platforms you use. For example, right now, Instagram Reels are getting the best engagement, so it only makes sense to jump in and start regularly posting Reels.

Do:  Hit up your social media manager friends for best practices and information on what’s working and what’s not. They’re on the platforms day in and day out, and they know what’s going to get you in front of the people you serve.

Don’t:  Give up too soon. Switching strategies can be frustrating and seems like a whole lot of extra work at first for very little results. Anytime you start doing something new, there’s a bit of a breaking-in period. Stay consistent. Keep doing the thing. You’ll get there!

Share Client Testimonials

I know we’re focusing a lot on social media right now, but that’s for good reason. There are literally billions of active users on the major platforms every day. Your ideal target audience is out there, and they want to find someone who can get results for them.

There’s no lack of competition though, so make sure they know you’re the bomb by regularly posting (monthly or weekly) client testimonials. This can be in the form of a text post with a photo, a screenshot or graphic, or a video.

Do:  Let go of any feelings of awkwardness or self-consciousness. This is not the time for that. There are people out there who need the services you offer. Someone else will be glad to step in and serve them instead of you if you’re not showing up in the space.

Don’t:  Don’t forget that your ideal clients are people just like you. It means a lot to them to read a testimonial from someone just like them who’s getting results. It plants the seeds of possibility in their minds – and you’re standing ready with the watering can!

Repurpose, Repurpose, Repurpose

Who says all your content has to be individually created separately for each platform? NOBODY, that’s who! Save yourself some time and energy by repurposing content where you can.

  • A blog can be broken into a number of text posts and LinkedIn articles
  • Video can be edited and cut into snippets for Reels, Stories, Video Pins, and TikToks
  • You can even use quotes from your blog for social media graphics and Pinterest quote cards

Sidenote:  Remember, the guts of the content can be the same, but you may want to format it for the individual platform. For example, Instagram is more graphics heavy, and captions will be shorter than Facebook.

Ask For Referrals

Have happy clients? I promise you those happy clients have friends and people in their networks who could use your services … but you won’t know if you don’t ask.

Don’t worry, it’s not as cringy as you think. A short email with, “Hey, I just wanted to let you know you’re one of my favorite clients – and I’d love to work with more rock stars like you. Is there anyone in your network you think would be a great fit for my services that you’d be willing to connect me with?”

Bada-bing, bada-boom! A compliment and a chance for them to share the awesomeness that is your copy – win-win! And it didn’t cost you a penny!
