8 Reasons To Use Your Writing Talents For Sales Copywriting

sales copywriting

I spent 15 years as a graphic designer with a journalism degree (yes, I know those two things don’t have a whole lot to do with each other) before I discovered something that changed my life – sales copywriting

There are SO many ways to generate income online as a writer! In looking for a way to grow my graphic design business, I stumbled into a whole world of online opportunities that I’d never known existed. It really got me thinking.

I’ve always loved to write. What if creating sale catalogs for cattle auctions isn’t the only thing I can do? What if I could actually build a business doing something I love … like writing?

I decided I had to try, and that decision set me on a journey to building a business as a sales copywriter. Today, my sales copywriting services help my clients generate millions in revenue and serve countless people with their products and services.

Sales copywriting isn’t the only path I could have taken to an online business as a writer, but I’m entirely certain it was the right path for me. Could it be the right path for you too?

In this article, I’m going to give you eight reasons a person should use their writing talents for sales copywriting. If you find yourself nodding along, maybe it’s time to consider dipping your toe in the water and learning more about sales copywriting.

There’s Tons of Project Variety

The only limit to the type of writing projects out there for sales copywriters are the number of products and services on the market right. If you love variety and hate the thought of getting pigeon-holed into one specific industry, no problem! You can do sales copywriting projects for a cowboy with a coaching program one week and a botox clinic owner the next. My clients have included:

  • Coaches
  • Course creators
  • Media influencers
  • Real estate agents
  • Financial advisors
  • E-Commerce sellers
  • Agency owners
  • Med spa owners
  • Dog trainers
  • Fitness experts
  • Network marketers
  • Relationship experts
  • And many, many more!

I personally love sales copywriting for a variety of industries, but not everyone does. If you love going niche and having a specific focus to the type of offers you write for, there are definitely opportunities out there for you as well. The sky really is the limit!

It’s an In-Demand Service

As long as people want to sell their products and services, sales copywriting will be in demand. Anyone who can write words that create conversions will never go hungry if they know how to get themselves out there and market their services.

I’m in several large entrepreneur/business owner Facebook groups, and I see posts from people looking for a copywriter multiple times a week. I also get alerts about companies looking to hire a copywriter from LinkedIn, and that list is LONG.

Good sales copywriting isn’t something every business owner or entrepreneur has the talent (or time or desire) to do. They need people who are skilled in sales copywriting in order to keep putting their offers out there so they can keep growing their businesses. The demand is so high that I regularly turn down clients because I don’t have the bandwidth to help them all.

You Can Do Sales Copywriting From Anywhere

Do you love to travel? Work better as a night owl? Want to be able to set your own schedule and have control of your time? Then sales copywriting might be for you.

I started out writing from my couch or my dining room table and quickly realized that I could grab my laptop and write from anywhere. Being location independent is awesome and seriously one of my favorite things about doing what I do. I’ve written from:

  • The bleachers during day-long basketball tournaments in between my daughter’s games
  • Airports and airplanes as a way to make the most of dead time
  • Hotels, resorts, and venues when I’m traveling to conferences and events
  • Road trips in the Jeep across the country
  • Campgrounds and forest cabins
  • You name it, I’ve probably written there!

It’s a Very Low-Overhead Business Model

Being a freelance sales copywriter requires very little investment. Do you have a basic laptop and a wifi signal? You’re good to go. Even starting a full-blown sales copywriting business has a very low overhead, as you don’t need expensive software, high-tech equipment, or a fancy office to get the job done.

As I’ve grown as a writer and an entrepreneur, we turned our spare room into a home office, and I’ve added a couple whiteboards, a webcam and USB microphone for filming, and an iPad. None of those things are 100% necessary to get the job done though. There’s no inventory or stock, and unless you’re hiring a team right away, you won’t have any staff to pay.

You Get to Impact People’s Lives

As a sales copywriter, you’re essentially partnering up with your clients to improve the lives of their target audiences. You become their mouthpiece and get to serve alongside them to create impact and change in people’s lives.

Some of my favorite clients ever are relationship coaches. Their programs help couples learn how to save their relationships by working on themselves first, and it really works. It works so well that their programs have a 99% success rate and 1% divorce rate.

Knowing that my words get to play a part in reaching someone in a way that may result in a saved marriage and a happier family is so, so rewarding. I wouldn’t change it for the world.

You Can Easily Measure the Results of Your Work

I mentioned above that I have a journalism degree, but what I didn’t tell you was I never used it after college. Yes, reporting the news provides an important service to the general public, but I struggled with seeing the results of my work. In other words, I wanted to do something that would produce a measurable outcome.

Sales copy has a very direct, measurable outcome. If it’s done well and targeted to the right audiences, the results will show in terms of conversions and sales. I love that! It allows me to get really granular about what’s working and what’s not so I can keep working towards better and better results for my clients.

The Pay is Good – REALLY Good

I always used to think writers didn’t get paid very well. Only best-selling authors made the big bucks, right? WRONG! Sales copywriters are some of the most well-paid writers out there and can even be some of the most well-paid digital marketing service providers.

Money isn’t everything – not by far. But if you have writing talent and can write copy that converts, there are countless businesses out there who desperately need your services and are willing to pay well for sales copy written by you.

You Meet Cool People From All Over the World

Being location-independent doesn’t just pertain to the writer. It also pertains to the clients’ locations. Because you can work from anywhere as a sales copywriter, you can also work with clients from anywhere in the world.

I’ve had the pleasure of working for clients in the U.K., Amsterdam, Australia, Japan, Canada, South Africa, Indonesia, the Caribbean, and the United States. It doesn’t matter to the client if you’re not in the same city, country, or even time zone as long as you can get the job done.
